How to Start Conversations That Will Help You Create a Positive Birth Experience

Are You and Your Birth Partner on the Same Page for Your Birth?

Preparing for birth isn’t just about packing your hospital bag and making sure you’ve picked out a name. It’s about ensuring that both you and your birth partner are aligned in your desires, expectations, and needs for the big day. The way you approach birth together will influence how empowered, safe, and supported you feel during the experience.

But how do you make sure you're on the same page? .......

It all starts with having the right conversations!!

Here are some thought-provoking questions to help you and your birth partner dive deeper into what a positive birth experience means for both of you, and to set a foundation for your birth preferences.

Questions for You and Your Birth Partner to Explore Together:

  1. What does a "positive birth experience" mean to you?

Are you envisioning a calm, quiet environment? Do you want to feel in control and empowered? Discuss how you want to feel during and after birth.

  2. What role do you see your birth partner playing?

Does your partner know what kind of support you’ll need? Whether it's physical, emotional, or practical support, have an open conversation about the kind of presence you want them to have.

  3. How do you both feel about pain management options?

Discuss your preferences for natural pain relief techniques (like breathing and relaxation) versus medical pain relief. Would your birth partner be comfortable helping you with techniques like massage or acupressure?

  4. What environment do you want for the birth?

Think about your surroundings – would you prefer a dim, quiet space? Music? What’s important to you to feel relaxed?

  5. How do you feel about interventions?

Knowing your options is crucial. Discuss how you both feel about induction, epidurals, or other medical interventions. What are your preferences, and how can you communicate them effectively to your caregivers?

  6. What will help you feel empowered during birth?

Explore your birth preferences together. Do you want to practice hypnobirthing techniques? Create a birth plan or “birth map”? Discuss what will give you confidence going into labour.

  7. How can your birth partner advocate for you?

There might be times when you’re not able to express your needs clearly during labour. Talk about how your birth partner can help communicate your wishes to medical staff when you’re focused on the process.

The Power of Preparation and Communication

When you and your birth partner take the time to have these conversations, you’ll feel more connected and confident about the journey ahead. You’ll also be in a stronger position to make informed decisions during labour and birth. Remember, the more prepared and united you both are, the more empowered you’ll feel during the birth process.
